10 Austin Weekend Favorites

Labor Day weekend called for a mini getaway. Up at 5:30am and 3 hours later, we hit the coffee scene in Austin. We enjoyed our share of caffeine, food, ice cream, and humidity. Here is my list of things to do while in Austin for the weekend.

1. FIGURE 8 COFFEE SURVEYORS

On a corner, tucked into a quiet neighborhood, this cafe offers some great coffee, pastries, and tacos from Tacodeli. The laid back atmosphere with white walls, wooden tables, and plants make it a great spot to meet up with friends, to study, or to just enjoy the morning.

 2. SEVENTH FLAG COFFEE

Across the street from food trucks and in a building that looks just like a home, is this open space. Dressed in neutrals, this cafe provides lots of natural light as you find the energy to start your day. Their coffee is also amazing and it so happens that they also serve tacos from Tacodeli. These tacos are seriously so good!

3. HILLSIDE FARMACY

We came hear for brunch, but the heat and humidity of the day had us feasting on fruit, cheese and bread, and cocktails. Whether you grab a seat inside or outside, this place has all the vintage charm you need.

4. VERA CRUZ ALL NATURAL FOOD TRUCK

Since moving to Texas from California, I have had little success in finding good Mexican food. Tex Mex just doesn't cut it for me. But these tacos from Vera Cruz All Natural Food Truck are some of the best tacos I've ever had and are enough for me and my husband to drive three hours to enjoy. I recommend the Chicken Al Pastor taco.

5. DOLCE NEVE

You know that guilty feeling that sometimes creeps up on you when you've eaten a very delightful dessert? Well that feeling doesn't exist when you eat gelato at Dolce Neve. At least it didn't happen for me when I ate their Watermelon Sorbet and Goat Cheese Lemon flavors. On a hot day, it tasted so refreshing and so light. I wanted seconds!

6. LICK HONEST ICE CREAMS

Lick Honest Ice Cream is another great place to grab dessert. They offer so many interesting flavors like Goat Cheese, Thyme, and Honey; Roasted Beets and Fresh Mint; PB&J; and Too Hot Chocolate. But if you're like me and want something a little more subtle and not too crazy, they do offer flavors like Vanilla and Honey or Coffee and Cream.

7. TEXAS CAPITOL

Enjoy some history, beautiful architecture, and dark green hues and browns at the Texas Capitol building. It's a free sightseeing trip to make!

8. ZILKER BOTANICAL GARDEN

Make your way through a path of luscious greenery, stop for a moment of zen at the Japanese garden, get up and close with the scent of roses from the many rose bushes, and walk through the prehistoric and butterfly gardens. There really is so much beauty to see at the Zilker Botanical Garden.

9. LADY BIRD JOHNSON WILDFLOWER CENTER

I'm not gonna lie, when I heard about this place, I thought I would be able to run and frolic in fields of wildflowers, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. However, I still recommend paying a visit there, preferably on a cool day. It is a pretty area to walk around and there is also a tower you can climb up with a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.

10. MURALS

There are tons of murals in Austin, so don't forget to pullover and take your photo with your favorites.
